Bob Biswas Movie Review: Small narrow streets, old bazaars, the smell of “ilish” (hilsa) fish sold in baskets, doors and windows made of real teak wood, painted walls, small shops running on tea stoves, no radio or gramophone But a song by RD Burman plays, people smoking small Goldflake or Wills navy cut cigarettes, Babu type people wearing half sweaters and spectacles on their stomachs after eating rice, big eyes with tan sarees and big neck blouses and Fair women wearing big red bindi…
At the crossroads, eating Luchi (puri) and Aloo Bhaja (potato curry) at the corner shop, people go for employment and plan for the day’s unemployment. Lovers of Macher-Jhol hang out every evening without any reason and debate for hours on the far-reaching consequences of Mohun Bagan’s center forward and Vladimir Putin’s visit to India. Sujoy Ghosh’s eyes are needed to see Kolkata going somewhere and not reaching anywhere. Bob Biswas is an unknown face of Kolkata, but the smell of Kolkata is visible on his face. Watch Bob Biswas released on Zee 5.
In 2012, producer-director Sujoy Ghosh co-wrote a film with writer Advaita Kala – ‘Kahaani’. The film starring Vidya Balan had an important character of a contract killer named Bob Biswas. Shashwat Chatterjee, the dashing actor of Bengali films, played the smoky character of Bob Biswas, a contract killer who was fat, unfit, wearing spectacles and gasping for breath even after a short run. The story of the film was good, but the character of Bob Biswas’s “Namaskar. Ami Bob Biswas. Saying ‘one minute’, the audience liked the man who shot in the middle of the forehead with a pistol fitted with a silencer. Seeing him, for a moment, I used to shiver inside. Sujoy has now written an entire film for this Bob Biswas character, in which a part of Bob Biswas’s life has been shown, and the funny thing is that the film ends where the film “Kahaani” begins. There is a difference, this time it is not Shashwat Chatterjee to play the role of Bob Biswas, but handsome actor Abhishek Bachchan who put on more than 100 kilos.
The film is directed by Sujoy’s daughter Diya Annapurna Ghosh. Diya has previously worked as an assistant director with Sujoy in the film “Badla”. If the feet of the son are visible in the cradle, then the skill of the daughter can be considered fixed even before her birth. Diya’s direction will remind you of Sujoy’s “Kahaani” film, but some specialties in which Diya has done wonders. They are known only after watching the film carefully. Sujoy had approached Abhishek earlier also to play Bob Biswas in the story, but Abhishek was busy those days. Then when the story of Bob Biswas started being written separately, Sujoy contacted Abhishek again and this time things worked out.
Similarly, the decision to hand over the command of direction to his daughter could also be strange, but Sujoy wanted to see this film from a new perspective, so he entrusted such a huge responsibility on the shoulders of a young director. Diya has done it well. Only one song of RD Burman is heard on the radio in the entire film. A strong female character (like most women in Bengal), cigarette smoking characters are few and far between, the film revolves around dark alleys and even in the darkness of the night, there are some characters who are in the film then laugh in the film Fear and dread, everything comes together. This lamp has given to the film.
Abhishek Bachchan is in the best role of his life. He had decided to be ugly for this character. Smallpox rash, weight above 100 kg, shapeless and unkempt body, and a confused look that turns into a dreaded but smiling contract killer by the end of the film. It is unbelievable that Abhishek will look Bengali so easily, while mother Jaya Bachchan is completely Bengali and Amitabh himself is aware of Bengali culture and language. Abhishek has hardly spoken Bengali in the film and the accent is also missing. Chitrangada Singh is wonderful. His good looks may be a curse for him in films, but in this character he has acted a lot with his eyes. The scene of beating Amar Upadhyay with Kolhapuri slippers in the office is amazing. This scene was an indication that her husband has returned and those who teased her should keep distance.
The second best role in the film was that of Bengali actor Paran Bandopadhyay. This character of Kali Da is the pivot of the film. This character was most suitable for philosophy in the entire film. The whole underworld uses this Kali Da, who runs a homeopathic medicine shop, to supply weapons, to hide the number two earnings and to bury all the secrets of the opposite business in his stomach. Rules are rules, like Kalida, who says esoteric things very easily, to explain the essence of life to Abhishek, gives the example of Shri Krishna’s Kalia Mardan, when Kalia snake says to Shri Krishna – You have given me only poison, So what else do I do? The rest of the cast like Purab Kohli as Pabitra Rabha Yaar Bubai as Dhonu, give such a wonderful performance that they are remembered long after the film is over.
The film is written by Sujoy and the dialogues are written by Raj Vasant. The dialogues are cheeky, funny and just what they need. Not a single word seems superfluous. There are also some memorable places in the film. Like the Paris bar where Purab Kohli is seen singing another RD Burman song in “Karaoke”. When Abhishek Bachchan thinks a lot or gets nervous, he goes to Dhonu’s chowmin cart and gives 3-4 plates of chowmin pail. The name of gun with silencer at Kali Da’s homeopathy store is Nux Vomica and that of gun without silencer is Arnica. All these things are the result of the fine thinking of a writer and director. Editor and cinematographer of Bengali films Garik Sarkar has found out the darkness of Kolkata. This city tells a new story even at night. The editor is Yasha Ramchandani who previously edited films like Article 15 or Thappad. Although this film is of more than 2 hours, but not even a single scene is seen inserted in the film. It is evident from the carelessness with which the film has been edited and presented that Yasha prefers the film and not the scenes suggested by the producer or writer. He should be thanked for the edit of the film.
In the end, the question arises whether Shashwat Chatterjee was better suited for the role of Bob Biswas? Maybe yes or maybe no. In both the circumstances, Abhishek Bachchan’s hard work and Abhishek’s wonderful acting cannot be forgotten. Leaving aside the prejudice, Abhishek has done a wonderful job. Now a whole series can be made on the character of Bob Biswas. Namaskar, Bob Bishash (Biswas), the dreaded character of this character who had the ability to scare you even for a minute has now emerged. It will shine in more films. Must watch this movie. Take out the name of Sujoy Ghosh and see the story by removing the hangover of the film. Every scene will give you a different feeling. Welcome Diya Annapurna, and welcome Abhishek Bachchan i.e. Bob Biswas.
